OUR EVENTS

THE FUTURE IS NOW

The future is now” is the motto that truly captures the constant need for evolution in today’s medicine. Operating procedures are increasingly advanced, technology has significantly cut human error, and the sharing of know-how is no longer a hurdle to reach but an accepted practice. And so to meet the demand for highly connected and ever more worldwide operating rooms, live surgery and streaming services are also evolving.

I. LIVE SURGERY MEANING

Live surgery is a practice that literally opens the doors of the operating theater conceptually to the entire medical scientific world. This solution allows physicians to stream and live stream surgical procedures, viewers to watch practices in detail, and most importantly have the opportunity to communicate with the medical team present in the room.

The main purposes of live surgery and the streaming operating room are to train and provide information. But they also offer the possibility to partner between different hospitals and, above all, to consult experts remotely in case of special surgeries. A know-how sharing that has never been seen before.

II. NEW TECHNOLOGICAL SOLUTIONS

First there was broadcasting, a highly invasive and technologically unfriendly way for live surgery services. Then came the breakthrough with streaming, which has:

  • eliminated installation costs

  • cleared the operating theatre of operators and bulky stage directions

  • removed the risks for the patient
  • increased image quality
  • allowed several systems to be connected
  • ensured access from any device

Technically what we are doing is providing seamless one-to-many and two-way communication. A true network of audio and video signals that, through an advanced network infrastructure, shares 4k images from the operating theatre to target locations such as universities, medical congresses or classrooms for CME courses.

It is necessary, for the live surgery service to be reliable, to have a stable connection and a video collaboration platform to connect the room to the different training and information venues.

At Tecnoconference, we provide specialised technical staff and meet all safety requirements and current health regulations.

  • Word to the expert
We asked Jacopo Bellucci, Live Surgery service manager at Tecnoconference, what it means to technically manage a service like this:

“Technically running a live surgery streaming service is a challenging but rewarding experience. Firstly, the detailed planning of the full operation must be done, including the preparation, testing and production phases of the event.

The next step is to select a team of highly competent technicians specialised in running such events. Once the production team members have been identified, the planning of the technical broadcasting system begins. This involves choosing the right cameras (high-definition, remotely controlled and fitted on dedicated low-invasive frames) to avoid obstructing the equipment and theatre operators.
Cameras can be remote or manned to find the best viewing angles, to film the surgery, microphones to capture the voices of the surgeons and assistants, and a reliable router to ensure real-time transmission over the Internet. In addition, the technical team must manage the configuration and complete testing of the system before the day of the event. This ensures that the system is reliable and operational to avoid any technical problems during live streaming. It is necessary to collaborate with medical and hospital staff to ensure that the event is conducted safely and in accordance with hospital procedures.

In conclusion, technically managing a live OR stream is a challenging experience that requires thorough planning, expert management, tight cooperation with the relevant players, and the skills to respond to technical emergencies in real time. Handling a live OR streaming requires good technological preparation, compliance with privacy regulations, constant attention to streaming quality, and timely resolution of technical problems.”

Moreover, at Tecnoconference, we have created LIVEbit, a proprietary management platform recognised as a top level technology in the meetings industry, developed by our in-house software house and the result of many years of experience and specialisation in the medical and scientific world.
The platform won the award for Innovation in the FCE Awards 2030 with an outstanding hybrid event ‘EUS Skyline’. A live and interactive medical congress, broadcast online with 12 hours of live surgery, from as many as 18 operation centres on five continents. III. OBLIGATIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Live surgery and operating room streaming services

Sharing and interaction, in live surgery and streaming operating theatre services, should always be accompanied by full patient safety and compliance with the hospital’s privacy policy. Here is a set of useful guidelines to comply with all liability criteria in the case of live surgery and streaming operating theatre:

  • written and signed patient consent request to stream the operation
  • the consent must be provided in advance and include type of streaming and platforms used
  • all consent and information must be entered in the medical record for the patient to refer to later
  • all identifying features of the patient such as face, tattoos, birthmarks and demographic information should always be removed
  • the patient has, of course, the right to refuse recording; the patient has to be assured that his or her decision will not influence the quality of care
  • the patient shall be made aware that the surgery broadcast online and its images may be downloaded by others
  • the patient will be able in any case to request the removal of his or her video from any platform

Last but not least, the video can be viewed, in case of adverse events, by the hospital and the patient himself in order to investigate the surgery’s history.
