EUS Skyline 2022

EUS Skyline is a live online medical congress, broadcasting 12 hours of live surgery, from as many as 18 operating centres on five continents. Surgeries from operating theatres were moderated by 18 remotely connected experts from as many countries around the World, following their respective time zones and under the expert guidance of two exceptional chairmen, from Italy and Belgium.

At its first edition in 2022, EUS Skyline was a unique event in the field of international science education, for its topics, the creativity of its format and the sustainability of the technological and inclusive solutions applied.

A true streaming marathon, EUS Skyline, designed by AQG and Tecnoconference, achieved all its goals:

The congress dealt with the somewhat unique topic of endosonography (EUS), the method to detect, evaluate and visualise solid or cystic lesions pertaining to the digestive system that would otherwise not be accessible.

This procedure requires a broad and complex arsenal of instruments and accessories specifically designed to perform each procedure. Therefore, the most detailed real-time display of the use of such instrumentation, in all its components, was required for the correct and timely explanation of the scientific topic.

The aim was to show in live, worldwide vision, the methods and manoeuvres of these complex operational procedures.

For this reason, AQG and Tecnoconference supported the scientific committee in devising a format that would meet both accessibility and visual and real-time demands. The format, in fact, mirrored that of a live television marathon, easy to follow and rich in content, in a joint setting where lecturers from 5 continents could act and make the presentations viewable over a wide and constant time span:

• 12 hours of live streaming
• 13 live operating rooms from 5 continents, following the time zone of a single day
• effective and visually stunning graphic and video contributions

A very complex technical and logistical design was devised to manage a remote hosting of no less than 13 operator centres with two hubs for moderation: the first in Rome, the second in Leuven (Belgium).

The event’s organisation and production were paperless and all-digital: remote technical rehearsals, remote direction, registrations, helpdesk, marketing activities, paperless contract and release management with a focus on minimising emissions.

‘0-flight‘ policy and use of local suppliers, both in Italy and the rest of the world, to reduce CO2 impact. From China to Kenya, from Australia to the United States, local technical professionals have been chosen.

A cut in wasteful costs made it possible to reinvest on the format proposed, on the scientific content and on the solutions that ensured the widest possible free use, following the formula ” – average costs per participant + educational offer”.

At the FCE Awards 2023, the prizes instituted 9 years ago by the Italian meetings industry association to reward the efforts of its members in innovating the conference and events sector, the ‘EUS Skyline: beyond the boundaries‘ project was awarded in the innovation category as stated in the Federcongressi&eventi press release:

“A new focus on endosonography. A live and online congress project across 5 continents, in real time. The proprietary Tecnoconference-LIVEbit platform was used to broadcast the event online, also from mobile, an innovative solution that broadened the audience on a global scale, live and on demand. Much appreciated was the complex direction that enabled live moderation of the broadcasts, ensuring interaction and the facility to discuss and solve specific doubts of the participants. The participation was intense, which certainly led to a breakthrough in innovation in training models.”

The FCE Awards ceremony was held during the gala evening of the Federcongressi&eventi Convention held in March in Florence, which this year highlighted, in addition to innovation, the most important main topics of the meeting industry’s current transformation and growth phase: creativity and sustainability.
